Frequently Asked Questions

What may I expect from a consultation?

What may I expect from a consultation?

At your consultation, feel free to ask as many questions as you like. It is a time to let your doctor know of your expectations. It is also the time your doctor will explain to you the best possible facial cosmetic surgical procedure /procedures for your requirement, the possible risks and the best possible outcome. A complete facial assessment and a series of tests to evaluate your basic health will also be conducted.

Am I the ideal candidate for aesthetic surgery?

Contrary to popular belief, facial cosmetic surgeries do not have any age or other restrictions as long as the patient is medically fit. Aesthetic surgery is ideal for anyone who has good self-esteem to begin with and wants to work on enhancing a particular facial trait. You should also be able to understand that there are certain limitations to medicine and technology and that only a certain level of change is achievable. At Dr Shetty’s, it is these boundaries that we strive to push to provide you with procedures best suited to your needs, enabling unmatched and guaranteed results.

Is there a difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?

Facial cosmetic surgery reshapes seemingly normal body structures to enhance appearance and self-esteem. It is usually not covered by health insurance as it is an elective procedure. However, surgery for Snoring/ Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is covered by most insurance companies due to its life threatening complications.

Reconstructive surgery is performed on physical abnormalities as a result of congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma or an infection or ailment. Generally, reconstructive surgery is conducted to improve function, while improving aesthetics. Most of these surgeries are usually covered by health insurance policies.

What is the pain associated with cosmetic surgeries?

There is a certain level of discomfort which varies with every facial cosmetic surgical procedure and each patient tolerates it to different levels. Based on your requirement Dr Shetty prescribes appropriate medication and post-operative care to help ease the process of recovery. Our feedback from most patients is that the pain and discomfort was less than what they had expected. With our time-tested pain management protocol we ensure a comfortable recovery.

What is the recovery period from cosmetic surgery like?

Most facial cosmetic surgeries give rise to swelling in the operated region which varies in each patient. It is usually most severe during the 2nd to 5th days and thereafter reduces gradually. Most of the swelling would have reduced by the end of the month. Most patients get back to normal daily activities within a week except in the case of jaw surgery where they may not reach optimal work efficiency for a month. Some patients notice facial asymmetry in the post operative phase which is due to the uneven reduction of swelling.

In the case of facial recontouring, some patients may complain of temporary lip and chin numbness, temporary ear discomfort, temporary nose block and throat irritation. However at Dr Shetty’s, by minimalising surgical time and utilizing minimally invasive techniques we are able to minimize complications and ensure speedy recovery.

How long will the benefits of the procedure last?

All facial cosmetic surgeries and surgeries for snoring are carried out with protocols developed over thousands of surgeries guaranteeing predictable and permanent results. Secondary corrective procedures are rarely required. We give special importance to a harmony between aesthetics and function.

Body contouring, fat reduction, Botox, fillers and skin tightening are inherently temporary in nature. You will have been evaluated before the process and an accurate estimate of the result will be given to you. Most results are long lasting if you maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.

How soon will I be able to get back to my routine?

The recovery time varies based on the procedure as well as the person it is conducted on. Dr Shetty will give you a clear estimate on the recovery time. You may need assistance for the initial few days after the surgery. Hospital admission will vary from a single day for day-care procedures to 3-4 days for major Facial Recontouring surgeries.

What are the possible risks?

There are risks associated with any surgical procedure, and cosmetic surgeries are no exception. We carry out a detailed pre-surgical evaluation and strictly follow internationally accepted pre-operative, operative and post-operative protocols to minimize risks. Without exception all surgeries are carried out under strictest control. Since these are elective surgeries, if the patients do not fit the medical fitness profile, surgery may be refused or postponed. All peri-operative protocols are audited for safety and care.

Do you use general or local anesthesia?

The kind of anesthesia used will depend on the situation and the procedure being conducted. Dr Shetty will inform you of this during your extensive consultation sessions.

Is there anything I can to do to minimize swelling or bruising?

Early mobilization is the key to reducing the swelling and its early resolution. Our patients are advised to get back to their normal lifestyle as soon as possible and to start regular exercises (even at their gym) that they are comfortable with. Based on the kind of procedure, you may need to sleep in a propped up position for at least a week after the procedure. This prevents collection of fluids in the area where the procedure has been conducted. You will also be given extensive post-procedural care instructions. Follow each of them to the last letter.

Do the implants used in the surgery react with the body?

Every implant used in the body initiates a degree of reaction within the body. This may vary depending on the type of material used, part of the body where it is used and technique of surgery. At Dr Shetty’s we use surgical grade implants which have high bio-compatibility and low tissue reaction for all surgeries. Where the patient’s own tissues can be taken without any adverse scar these may be used. All implant details with the costing will be discussed with the patients prior to the surgery in order to achieve a balance between cost and patient needs.

Will there be any tell tale signs after surgery?

Most Facial Recontouring surgeries are carried out from inside the mouth or within the hair line leaving no visible facial scar and the only lasting tell tale sign is your aesthetically desired change and a happier you.
